Georgia High School Graduation Diagnostic Tests

All 10th grade students will take the Georgia High School Graduation Diagnostic Tests in English and Mathematics on Wednesday, April 14, 2010. These tests predict student progress towards successful completion of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT).

Students should be sure they are at school and on time for this testing session. Testing will be administered by advisement teachers. Students who do not show adequate progress on this test will need to participate in some type of remediation program either during the summer months or next fall.

The summer administration of the Georgia High School subject tests are schedules as follows:

Social Studies July 13

Students who need to take or retake one or more sections of the GHSGT should see their counselor or the graduation coach to sign up for review sessions and testing dates.

A College Program for

High School Juniors and Seniors

o House Bill 149 is an arrangement whereby an eligible student in 11th or 12th grade, who spent the prior school year in attendance at a Georgia public high school, may take all of his/her courses at or through a college, technical college, or university.

o Students will receive high school credit and college credit simultaneously while attending college classes on the college campus full-time. Approved college on-line courses can also be taken that meet high school graduation requirements.

o MOWR provides high school students the opportunity to “jump start” their postsecondary education during their high school years.

o High school students will be free to “move on” earlier to the next educational level.

o Students will have an educational alternative other than the traditional high school setting or school day structure.

o Students can save money on future college costs since most expenses are paid from the local school system funding.

What Else Do You Need To Know?
1) Students can live on campus or commute but are responsible for these expenses.
2) Students must be on track for graduation.
3) All high school End of Course Tests and Georgia High School Graduation testing requirements must be met.
4) Classes do not count against the HOPE Scholarship or Grant hours.

Attention Seniors

Georgia High School Graduation Tests

Seniors must pass all subject tests (English, Math, Science, & Social Studies) in order to receive a high school diploma.

Tutoring is available each day from 3:45–4:45 p.m. Monday - Thursday, March 8-11 and March 15-18.

Georgia High School Graduation Tests Review Sessions

Review Sessions are being held for GHSGT. Tutoring sessions are from 3:45 - 4:45 each Tuesday and Thursday until March 18. Students are selected for tutoring services based on a variety of factors, including diagnostic test scores, EOCT test scores, and previous attempts on the GHSGT. In addition, students should prepare for the graduation tests using USA TestPrep (http://www.usatestprep.com/). The username and password are available in the counseling office at Kell. ALL students and parents should use the high school planning timelines available when planning for success.

9th grade students can begin creating a portfolio and planning their high school coursework. Student are also encourage to take an interest inventory, learn more about career choices, and begin thinking about college.

10th grade students can use GAcollege411 to learn more about themselves as well as how to build successful study habits. Continuing to add to your personal portfolio will be beneficial as you start the career planning and/or college application process.

11th grade students can use the FREE test prep for GHSGT, PSAT, ACT and/or SAT as well as the vocabulary builder to prepare for upcoming college admissions tests. Juniors should also begin planning college visits and exploring colleges that match their interests and abilities.

Kell Career Center

Students needing internet access for SAT preparation, college searches or admissions applications, or for completing homework are encouraged to use this resource.

FREE SAT Online Preparation Course

For the fifth consecutive school year, the state has made available to all Georgia students, grades 9-12, the SAT Online Course. This web-based, personalized online course offers students review lessons and quizzes designed by the maker of the SAT exam, an immediate essay scoring feature and 6 full-length SAT tests with immediate scoring and individualized reports for students and teachers.

The official SAT Online Course contains:

· Hundreds of practice questions
· Automated essay scoring
· Sample student essays
· Personalized score reports
· Detailed answer explanations

Students who registered for the SAT Online Course and participated in the program scored higher than students without that course preparation: critical reading = +13 points, mathematics = +19 points and writing = +16 points.

End of Course Tests (EOCT)

The State of Georgia mandates the administration of an End Of Course Test (EOCT) in eight core subjects. Each EOCT is aligned with the state adopted curriculum. Any student enrolled in and/or receiving credit for an EOCT course, regardless of grade level, will be required to take the EOCT upon completion of that course. The EOCT is the final exam for an EOCT course. The student's final grade in the course will be calculated using the course grade as 85% and the EOCT score as 15% of the final grade. The student must have a final course grade of 70 or higher to pass the course and to earn credit toward graduation.Study Guides

Georgia High School Graduation Tests

High school students are assessed on the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) and the Georgia High School Writing Test (GHSWT). Most students take the GHSWT during the fall of their junior year, and the GHSGT during the spring of their junior year. The GHSGT consists of tests in the areas of English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Students are required to pass the GHSWT and all sections of the GHSGT to graduate. Several retest opportunities are available through the year for students who do not pass the GHSWT or one or more sections of the GHSGT.
